VSMM 2016 Workshops
VSMM 2016 being organized in Kuala Lumpur provides an ideal opportunity for the Centre for Research Creation in Digital Media (CRCDM to collaborate with international partners and showcase current research through workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions at the Sunway University. The workshop fee includes lunch and refreshments.
Workshop 2: Aerial Drone (Half Day)
The DJI Phantom II is an entry level Quad-Copter that is readily available for any consumer from hobbyist to videographers. The GPS stabilization technology allows for better control of this Quad-propeller drone. Combinations of a compact action camera with the drone will give amazing views and perspectives to your audiovisual production.
This workshop will give an overview and introduction to flying (piloting) basics, safety and FPV capabilities. Prepping the action camera prior to flying will be part of the session together with basic post-production considerations such as lens correction and color correction in an NLE suite.

Workshop 3: Macrography (Half Day)
Macro photography is the art of capturing extremely small subjects in a way they appear greater than their life size in the photograph. Macro photography can be done using dedicated macro lenses which are pretty expensive. However it also can be performed in much lower prices using reverse rings and extension tubes. The decision of using dedicated macro lenses, reversed lenses, extension tubes, or combination of both reversed lenses and extension tubes is determined by various factors including purpose, budget, the required magnification, time, environment and lighting, photographer skills and many others. This workshop looks at the least expensive way of macro photography using reverse ring and extension tubes. This is the most complicated approach to macro photography as the whole process is manual. Although dedicated automatic macro lenses provide more convenience, sometimes manual methods are inevitable especially if higher magnification is desired. By the end of this workshop participants will be able to perform manual macro photography in the most affordable way using DSLR cameras.

Workshop 4: KeyShot (Half Day)
KeyShot is real-time ray-tracing rendering software which uses a physically correct render engine developed by Luxion. KeyShot provides highly accurate photorealistic 3D rendering supporting nearly all types of 3D files. Being able to integrate with almost all major 3D applications, KeyShot has become one of the best alternatives to achieve the final results in a short time. Its interactive interface makes the rendering process straightforward and speeds up the whole project. KeyShot takes advantage of all CPU cores and does not require any specific hardware like powerful GPU. Therefore it can be used on all today’s computers. The workshop covers three major areas including materials, lighting, and rendering. It also takes a look at simple linear animations such as turntable or exploded view. No prior 3D knowledge is required as nowadays millions of 3D models are available online whether free or paid, which can be used by everyone. By the end of this workshop the participants will be able to visualize their 3D models in any desired way to be used for different purposes.

Workshop 1: Designing Compelling AR and VR Experiences (Half Day)
This workshop will teach attendees how to design compelling Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (VR) experiences for head mounted displays (HMD) and handheld devices. Recent developments have been meant that AR and VR technology is more widely available than ever before, and there are a wide range of tools that can be used to create AR and VR applications. However these applications are very different from other mobile or desktop experiences and so developers need to learn key design skills. This workshop will provide an overview of AR and VR interface design, user experience development, and AR and VR content authoring tools. Examples will be drawn from leading companies and academic laboratories. Research direction will also be discussed that will affect future AR and VR development.

Workshop 5: 3D PRINTING & SCANNING (1 Day)
This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of 3D scanning, 3D printing, and how to prepare a 3D model for printing. This course is a mixture of tutorial and practical sessions where participants will experience using a 3D scanner and 3D printer. Participants will gain knowledge on the available 3D scanning technologies, including popular types of functional and non‐functional 3D printers in the market for industrial and home use.
